The Stress Less event was an event made possible by students of a Professionalism Advocacy and Leadership class in the Parks and Recreation department. The students wanted to create an event to help other students relieve some stress, especially during this stressful time of the semester. The event was from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. took place at the ski lodge so it was accessible to all students who live on or off campus. There was a bonfire and plenty of food such as pizza mountain pies, s’mores and hot dogs. Cooking the food on the fire is something most students do not get to do as often while living in a dorm or an apartment. Spending time in nature is known as an immediate stress reliever. Combining time outdoors with other friendly students, good conversation about non-school related topics and a therapy dog is bound to take some stress away. They also had games like cornhole and can jam. It was easy to put together, fun, free and effective.
I did not know any of the students putting on the event, which I went to by myself. There were around 20 people there and even though they did not know me, they all were so nice and made me feel welcome. They even encouraged me to invite my friends! One thing they did was an instant stress reliever and I bet they do not even know it. Just being a friendly face or starting a conversation with someone new can make that person’s day drastically better. Talking to new people, trying to fit in and making friends can be one of the most stressful aspects of college. Thanks to social events such as Stress Less with pleasant people, comfort food, furry friends, games and nature, college does not always have to be as stressful as it certainly can be.
